Harith Morgadinho Farooq is the founder of the Extinct or Shy project. He is a Mozambican herpetologist, currently doing his post-doc on Threats to Biodiversity at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Publications.


Cristóvão Nanvonamuquitxo is a local co-coordinator of the project. He is a Mozambican herpetologist lecturing at Lúrio University, Mozambique. He helped designing the project from the beginning and his main expertise is on sampling techniques and ecology.


Isildo Nganhane is a local co-coordinator of the project. He is a Mozambican entomologist lecturing at Lúrio University, Mozambique. He joined our team to help us extend our sampling to terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates. His main expertise is on the taxonomy of dung beetles (Scarabaeinae) and long-horned beetles (Cerambycidae)


Allison Perrigo is the Director of the Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Centre, Sweden. She is coordinating an initiative that will provide training on data analysis and scientific writing to the students participating in the project. Publications.


Students


Abel Tomé Caetano, Mozambican, born in Nhamatanda and a student at the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is doing is thesis on the Extinct or Shy Project where he will be sampling several biodiversity groups, including amphibians, reptiles and mammals. His thesis is on the effects of loss and fragmentation of habitats on the diversity of rodents and shrews in the district of Memba.


Samuel Carlos Omar, Mozambican, born in Chigoma in Niassa. Currently he is a student at the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University, Mozambique. He will be part of a team that will be sampling amphibians, reptiles, mammals and terrestrial invertebrates in Memba. His thesis is on the understanding of the relationship between amphibians and the abundance of mosquitos.


Brito Joao Alberto, Mozambican, born in Chiure, is student at the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is doing his thesis through the Extinct or Shy project, where he will sample various taxonomic groups, including amphibians, reptiles and mammals. His thesis is on the Diversity of herpetofauna according to soil type in Memba, Nampula.


Ali Luciano Puruleia, Mozambican, born in Nacala-porto and a student on the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is doing his thesis through the Extinct or Shy project where he has already spent over 6 months collecting amphibians and reptiles in Lumbo. The title of his thesis is: Evaluation of the efficiency of various techniques of reptile sampling.


Iassine Amade, Mozambican, born in Pemba and a student on the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is doing his thesis through the Extinct or Shy project where he has already spent over 6 months doing the botanical assessment of both wet and dry seasons of our sampling sites. The title of his thesis is: Vegetation assessment of disturbed ecosystems in Lumbo, where Scolecoseps boulengeri and Proscelotes aenea are expected to occur.


Wilson Carlos Francisco Monia, Mozambican, born in Quelimane and a student on the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is collaborating with the Extinct or Shy project where he has already spent over 6 months collecting amphibians and reptiles in Lumbo. He is also inventorying the mammals in the area for his thesis, titled: An inventory based on camera traps to evaluate the species composition of terrestrial mammals in the Nampula province, Mozambique.


Abdurabe Franciscano Jamal, Mozambican, born in Nacala-porto and a student on the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is collaborating with our project Extinct or Shy where he has been collecting amphibians and reptiles in Lumbo for the last 6 months. At the same time he is doing his thesis on the Ibo Island with the title: Morphology, spatial distribution and caffeine concentration of Coffea sp. in the islands of Ibo and Quirimba, Cabo Delgado.


Milagre Ernesto, Mozambican, born in Mandimba, Niassa and a student on the Biological Sciences course at Lúrio University. He is collaborating with our project Extinct or Shy where he will be collecting amphibians and reptiles in Lumbo for 6 months. He is also inventorying the birds in the area for his thesis.

Other collaborators

Yasalde Massingue is a Mozambican biologist born in Maputo. He finished his BSc at Lúrio University in 2019. Besides being a collaborator in the Extinct or Shy project he is currently a research assistant in biodiversity at the Niassa National Reserve, where he is doing his MSc in Applied Ecology. The title of his thesis is: Evaluation of the composition of the avian guild: Comparison between areas with and without Human Presence in the Niassa National Reserve.
